From 1 July 2022, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and nurses can distribute fit notes after the government brought in new legislation.

A fit note is usually issued by a doctor to provide an employer with evidence of any advice that they have given to an employee and to explain any absences from their job.

The new law will aim to ease pressure on doctors and GPs and, according to the government, streamline the patient experience rather than them being seen by health professionals who may not be in the best position to help.

The new legislation follows recent changes made earlier this year, which enabled fit notes to be issued digitally, making the process more efficient for both health professionals and patients.

Jo Davis, employment partner, B P Collins advises, “Employers should consider their sickness absence and sick pay rules and procedures on the back of this law change, to ensure they recognise the enlarged list of healthcare specialists who can provide valid fit notes.”
